Abstract

The issue of plastic waste in Indonesia has become a serious challenge in environmental management. Palembang City, particularly 20 Ilir III Subdistrict, faces plastic waste problems due to high population density and low public awareness of waste management. Improperly disposed plastic waste contributes to environmental pollution, potentially reducing the quality of life. Therefore, education and innovation are needed to reduce household plastic waste. This community service activity utilized education and training methods conducted at Bougenville Posyandu, under the working area of Talang Ratu Public Health Center. Education was provided through counseling on the impacts of plastic waste and practical training on recycling innovations to reduce household plastic waste. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test assessments to measure participants' knowledge improvement. The results indicated an increase in community understanding of plastic waste management. The average knowledge score before the intervention was 6.58, which increased to 7.69 after the intervention. Statistical tests showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between pre- and post-education, confirming the program's effectiveness in raising awareness. This activity successfully improved community understanding of plastic waste management. Education and training on plastic waste processing innovations can be an effective strategy to reduce environmental pollution. As a recommendation, similar educational programs should be implemented sustainably by involving more community groups and receiving support from the government and private sectors to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
